Matt
has been very active in community service activities and
volunteerism dating back to high school where he was a volunteer
at Rhode Island's Hasbro Children's Hospital. In college,
Matt became actively involved with various service oriented
projects including the Family Literacy Project, Appalachian
Volunteer Corps, and other campus service groups. Over the
years, he has volunteered at Head Start centers, hospitals, soup
kitchens, social service agencies, and community
coalitions. You might
be saying to yourself, "what draws people to community
service and volunteerism?" In short, if you do it you'll
find out rather quickly or already know! Many people volunteer
to help those in need, use their own time constructively, contribute to the community and the "greater good",
and feel better. Others, particularly students, volunteer to
gain new skills and to learn about different careers or fields.
Matt does it for the rush, to support those in need in the
community, and for the learning experience. Many universities are moving towards
incorporating community service and a rather new concept,
service learning, into their curricula. Service Learning is an academic and social educational method that meets genuine student, school or community needs and requires the
application of knowledge, skills and a systematic reflection on the experience. Recent Volunteer Activities
