The Breakers, Newport, RI

Built by Cornelius Vanderbilt
II in 1893, this Italian Renaissance style palazzo is one of the most obviously self-advertising and
conspicuous of the slough of opulent shacks in Newport. The grandest of Newport's summer cottages, The Breakers is a
symbol of the Vanderbilt family's social and financial preeminence in turn-of-the-century America. Today, the house is designated a National Historic
Landmark and is operated by the Preservation Society of Newport
County.
